The History

On June 19, 1865, enslaved people in Texas finally received word that they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had already declared it. That day, known as Juneteenth, is not just a holiday. It is the truest American freedom day, a moment of reckoning, resilience, and celebration rooted right here in Austin, Texas. For Austin's Black community, Juneteenth has always been more than a date on a calendar, it is a living tradition of joy, remembrance, and pride passed down through generations. As we honor the freedom fighters, ancestors, and community elders who carried this legacy forward, we also carry it into the present.

Why Juneteenth Matters in Austin

Austin has one of the oldest and most storied Juneteenth traditions in the country. Texas was the birthplace of this freedom day, and Austin's Black communities, from East Austin to the historic freedom colonies scattered across the region, have kept that flame burning for over 160 years. Juneteenth is not just history. It is living culture, community celebration, and a reminder that freedom must always be honored, shared, and passed on.
